BAILEY THE BALSAM FIR TREE is written by Nancy Ann Higgins Willey and illustrated by Sarah Pedneault Anderson.

Deep in the heart of Washington County, Maine, there is a beautiful, unspoiled forest of Balsam Fir Trees as far as the eye can see, where more than 17,000 dog tags are hung.

This pristine forest inspired Maine author Nancy Ann Higgins Willey of Cherryfield, Maine, to write this charming children’s story about Bailey, a Balsam Fir, and the Veterans’ Remembrance Trees of the Balsam Valley.

This story helps teach children about the Veterans’ Remembrance Trees and the importance of remembering and honoring our nation’s heroes.

A beloved teacher for many years, Mrs. Willey authored numerous children’s books throughout her lifetime. Bailey the Balsam Fir Tree was her first book to be published in print. Mrs. Willey passed away in May 2026 at the age of 94 and will be deeply missed. Through Bailey’s story, her legacy of education, storytelling, and love for Maine continues to inspire future generations.

So, grab your favorite child, some hot cocoa and cookies and get lost in the woods of Maine.
